SWORD OF THE DRAGON, early 1980's portfolio sample
Another portfolio piece, drawn right after I graduated from the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, I think. I was experimenting with sepia inks and airbrush. The advent of Heavy Metal magazine in the US and the airbrush work of Richard Corben proved a big inspiration for me to experiment beyond non-traditional comics techniques. (Note the unbridled Paul Gulacy influence that shows up in a few panels as well!)This sample piece was for a story idea that I had concerning the adventures of a medieval Japanese samurai warrior, Ryu Sho ("The Dragon"), who stumbles upon the lost Pacific continents of Mu and Lemuria.
